Ok, the fridge door fell off (broken hinge) while Kaz was putting groceries in the fridge, but still, it happened while she was using the fridge, so it's all on her, right? Because that's the way it works. Except when it happens to me!
In any case, that meant that instead of buying a new TV this year, we bought a new fridge. It will be delivered some time tomorrow, which is good because the only thing holding our fridge together right now is a half a dozen "child-proof" fridge locks.
It took us about 5 minutes to decide that we wanted to replace rather than repair. For one thing, even if we could get it repaired, it would mean we didn't have fridge for however long it took for all that to happen. And not only does the hinge need replacing or repairing, the door needs new seals as well. We decided it just wasn't worth the hassle.
So while Karen got herself and Tom ready for a shopping trip, I started researching replacement options. It turns out that there weren't a lot of decisions to make. We didn't want a smaller fridge, and anything more than a few centimetres wider won't fit in our kitchen. So we decided we'd buy the updated model of the fridge we've got now. A Kelvinator Opal 520L. No fancy bells and whistles. No icemaker. No water dispenser in the door. No iPod dock.
So I checked online to see who had it at the best price, and when we found it, Karen called them to make sure they had one in stock. It turns out the first store she called didn't, but they had a Westinghouse model that is the exact same box, but with a few extra features (nothing fancy, but enough to give them an excuse to sell it for a couple hundred bucks more than the Kelvinator).
So the manager tells Karen that he'll sell us the Westinghouse for the price of the Kelvinator, meaning we'd get a $1500 fridge for less than $1200. And he said if we bought it before 9 o'clock tonight, they'd deliver it tomorrow, and haul off the old fridge as well. We were pretty happy with that deal, but went to another store first, where we could see both fridges side by side. Happy with the Westinghouse, we headed to the Belconnen store that offered us the deal, and when we got there, they'd sold the last one in stock, so we took the floor model with an additional discount and free delivery. Sweet!
So it sucks that Kaz broke our fridge, and that buying a new fridge meant we're not buying a new TV, and we're not paying off debt, and it's probably going to eat into our vacation money, too. But it's cool that we're getting a new fridge and that we got a good deal on it.
Oh yeah, Kaz not only broke the fridge, but by breaking the fridge, she also broke dinner. So instead of going home and enjoying delicious home-made cheeseburgers, we stopped at McDonalds on the way home. Bleh.
