Starting Now

"Everything begins with choice." -- Morpheus

One hundred and fifty-nine days ago I made a choice to start losing weight and getting healthy. Since then, I've lost 35.7 kg (78.7 lbs). That's a good start, but I've got a long way to go. Right now I weight 159.8 kg (352.3 lbs) and I want to get down to 84.3 kg (186 lbs). That's what I weighed when I graduated from high school. The blog will be about how I choose to make that happen.

The two big choices I've made so far are joining Weight Watchers, and eating more Real Food.

Weight Watchers has helped because it means keeping a record of what I eat, but I've done that before, and I can do it for free. Essentially, I'm paying Weight Watchers to use their scales. I don't know why getting on their scales every week (or two) works better than using the ones in our bathroom, but getting that number at the meeting helps keep me going, and keeps me focused.

Eating Real Food, at least for me, means spending a lot more time in the kitchen, and making better choices about the meals I'm making, and the ingredients I'm using. More home cooking; less take-out. More fresh fruits and vegetables; less food out of cans, bags, packets, etc. Ultimately, I want to get out of the industrial food system, and out of the supermarket, and either grow our own, or get our food from people we know.

Some of the changes I've made include buying organic, free-range eggs instead of cage eggs. And free-range and/or organic chicken. I'm working up to getting all our meat from local people who raise their animals ethically and sustainably. We've made a few trips to the different farmers markets here in Canberra, and grabbed some beef from Mountain Creek Farm that was amazing. I want to get more of their beef, pork, lamb, and I'm hoping I can get my hands on some of their eggs, too!

This week, eating Real Food includes lamb & lentil stew, cheeseburgers, pork pozole, baked chicken & rice, meatball soup, and spaghetti. The fries to go along with the cheeseburgers will come out of a bag in the freezer, and the chicken & rice recipe involves a couple of cans of soup, so those are things I need to work on. Otherwise, I think  that's some pretty damned good home-cooking.
