I've just started reading Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer, and he's pointing out that most Western meat-eaters consider eating dog to be abhorrent. I get the point he's making, but I have to say that for me personally, I don't have a problem with it. Cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, dogs, cats, squirrels, rabbits, whatever. It's pretty hard to make a strong argument against eating one while you're more than happy to chow down on another.
So far, I'm enjoying the book, which is a bit unexpected given that I found it after reading quite a few militant vegetarian/vegans raving about how awesome and life-changing it was. But so far Foer has been very reasonable, unlike the folks who were recommending his book.
I don't freak out at the idea of eating dog, but I admit that I find it hard to imagine dogs being raised in an ethical, sustainable way in the same way that other animals are raised for human consumption. How exactly would a "dog farm" work?
