So far, so good. We've been eating plenty of Real Food around here this weekend.
The boys thoroughly enjoyed the sloppy joes, except for Tom, who was traumatized when he tried to take his first bite, and everything fell out onto his plate ("Uh-oh, mess! Burger meat fall out!"). I fixed it for him, and then helped eat the rest of it, but he definitely didn't like not being able to feed himself.
I enjoyed mine, but next time I'll put in less brown sugar because I thought the sauce was too sweet. And somewhere down the road I might try making my own buns, or see if I can get some decent ones from the bakery, because the ones at Coles are too soft and flimsy.
Saturday night was pork chops and vegetable gratin, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The gratin had a layer of pumpkin (butternut squash), then a layer of sautéed leek, and then a layer of sliced apple, topped with parmesan cheese. And the pork was boneless porterhouse steaks with a glaze made from redcurrant jelly, red wine vinegar and rosemary. I love both, James thought the pork was awesome but didn't like the apple in the gratin, and Jack went nuts over the gratin but didn't think much of the pork (not that he didn't like the taste, but he doesn't really like large pieces of meat that he has to cut up).
The redcurrant jelly (which I'd never eaten before) was a big hit, and Karen used some today to make a redcurrant & chocolate sauce to serve over her vanilla ice cream (my idea and she didn't even offer me a taste!).
Then tonight was supposed to be tuna casserole, but for some reason I cooked meatballs and potato salad, instead. Yum! It turned out to be a great summertime meal, but unfortunately we had a big cold front come through this weekend that put snow on the mountains. Oh well, the food was still good, although James really didn't like my potato salad. So when I cook this meal again (and I'll definitely be cooking it again), I'll probably just give him plain mashed potato instead.
I went for an hour-long walk today, which felt good. I'm going to try to do it every day this week, right after the boys leave for school.
