Weekly Menu Plan, Oct. 22-28

I've just realized that I didn't post a menu plan for this week. So here it is, plus a few comments about the meals we've eaten so far.

Friday - Cheeseburgers, French Fries, Coke

Saturday - American Chop Suey, Home-baked rolls

Sunday - Curry Chicken and Tomato Pilaf

Monday - Sardine, Anchovy & Veggie Casserole

Tuesday - Meat Loaf & Mashed Potatoes

Wednesday - Spaghetti

Thursday - Spaghetti for me, and whatever Karen makes for herself and the boys

American Chop Suey (I have no idea why it's called that) was a new one that I thought might be good for Saturdays when I work. I could throw it in the crockpot and all Karen would have to do is add the pasta an hour or so before dinner time. And that's pretty much the way it worked, although she said she had to add extra tomatoes and/or water to keep it from getting too dry. I think our slow cooker, even on low, doesn't cook quite slow enough. But it turned out fine, it's quick and easy, although if I did it again, I'd probably skip the jar of ready-made pasta sauce and just make my own. Since Jack's friend, Thomas, was over for dinner, Karen made some rolls to help stretch the meal (which wasn't really necessary, since the recipe made plenty). They were delicious since she topped them with my little block of extra sharp vintage cheddar (yeah, she used the WHOLE THING!), but I definitely could've put that cheese to better use.

Then last night was the curry chicken pilaf. We've had it before, and thoroughly enjoy it. I was a little bit bummed that I'd ordered a little tub of plain yogurt, and Coles gave me a larger tub of fat-free yogurt instead. I'm assuming they were out of the one I'd ordered, and  that they were trying to be helpful, but the fat-free stuff looked a little weird. Tasted okay, though, so no big deal. James says this is the only dish he likes with raw tomato.

Tonight's sardine, anchovy and vegetable casserole is a bit of an experiment. With oily little sardines, eggs, cream and cheese, it's definitely NOT a low-fat meal. It's high in fat, but low in carbs (less than 6 grams per serve) and provides plenty of protein, vitamin B-12, tryptophan (an essential amino acid), selenium, vitamin D, and Omega-3, and also manganese, Vitamin C, vitamin A, and more. In terms of Weight Watchers Points, it's a freaking train-wreck. 16 points for one meal, which is over half my daily allotment, and nearly an entire day's worth of Points for most people.

I'd planned this meal without checking the points (although I knew it would be high), and before I'd set my 10kg goal. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't do it, but since I have, I'll just have to do my best to manage it. A good long walk this afternoon ought to help me stay within my Points for the day, so I'm not going to worry about it too much. I just hope it's worth it, and that it doesn't taste like shit. If it turns out alright, I'll try to put sardines (maybe not this particular dish) into the "oily fish" rotation along with tuna and salmon. If it's crap, I've got some left-over chop suey that'll do just fine.
