Our Container Garden

Ok, I'm trying something a little different today. I've just installed Picasa and uploaded some pics to a Picasa web album, and now I should be able to embed a slideshow of those pics into Blogger.

These are some pics of the little container garden we started a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to try to take new pics every week or two to record how we're doing.

We're mostly growing herbs (dill, basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, etc.) to cut down on what we're spending at the grocery store, and also a few veggies (carrots, lettuce, tomatoes) so the kids can have a little fun growing their own food.

We all trekked down to Magnet Mart (the local home & garden barn) and spent a couple of hours picking out plants (and the pots, which probably took longer to choose than the plants), and getting a bit of schooling from the people there since we are garden noobs. So now we've got a dozen or so containers, with plans to double that over the next few months if we manage to grow this stuff successfully.

There's no way we could ever grow more than a tiny proportion of what we eat (at least not as long as we're living in this townhouse where we can't put in any permanent garden beds, and everything has to be planted in containers), and to be honest, I'm not sure how much gardening I really want to get into. I know some people really love it, but I'm not at all sure that I'm going to be one of those people. I think I might be more like Susan Carpenter, who explained in her recent LA Times article that, after two years of growing her own food in suburban LA, she'd rather just let real farmers do it and buy organic, locally-grown produce through a CSA (community-supported agriculture) program.
