A quick update from Sardine Central. Honestly, I thought it was pretty good. Not great, but I ate it, and mostly I enjoyed it. The cheesy-eggy-creamy sauce was nice (I used the broiler to brown the top, which helped), the sardines were okay, the veggies were fine, and the anchovies were a nice surprise that really livened up the dish. Having said all that, I doubt I'll cook it again. The boys hated it. I mean seriously hated it.
They hated the look (once they peeked underneath that nice, golden cheese). They hated the taste. They hated the texture. They hated the oiliness of the sardines, and the crunchy/gritty feeling from the bones. But I give 'em credit. They each tried it, gave it a short but passionate review, and then I let them makes themselves some baked beans and toast.
I've got one can of sardines left, and I'm going to look for other recipes to find out what I can do with them. But I won't bother offering to share.
Damn, I wish I'd taken a picture.
