One Week Weight Loss Record

This morning I weighed in at 152.6 kg (344.4 lbs).

Last Wednesday I weighed in at 160.7 kg (354.3).

In one week, I've lost 8.1 kg (17.85 lbs).

I'm pretty sure that's a personal record. Of course that was in response to record-breaking weight gain, so I'll be careful not to break my arm patting myself on the back. But after putting so much back on, it's good to see it going even faster.

And essentially, I've done it simply by stopping the junk food and alcohol. Starting last Wednesday, I went back to skipping breakfast (working off the "if you're not hungry, don't eat" principle), bacon and eggs for lunch (I need to get back in the habit of having some veggies, too), and on Wednesday and Thursday I had spaghetti bolognese, then my beef stew every night for dinner since then.

One new thing I tried yesterday was drinking a meal replacement shake instead of having the bacon and eggs for lunch. It wasn't horrible, and I didn't feel hungry afterwards, so I guess it did what it was meant to do. I don't know that I'll make a regular habit of using them, but I've got one more, so I'll try it again today and then decide whether to buy more tomorrow.

Weigh-in: 30 July 2012

Today's weight: 154.1 kg (339.7 lbs)
Change: +2.3 kg (5.0 lbs)
Total loss: 41.4 kg (91.3 lbs)

Yeah, things got a little crazy while I was on vacation. I may go back and try to add in some additional weigh-ins, but for now I'm just going to work with where I am now. Looking at the numbers I've got, after my 25 June weigh-in, I dropped down to 148.3 kg (326.9 lbs), then went back up 150.3 kg (331.3 lbs), back down to 149.1 kg (328.7 lbs), then back up to 150.9 kg (332.7 lbs). Then I went up to around 155 kg (eating a LOT of junk food), held there for about a week, then in the last few days of my vacation, I went into an eating and drinking frenzy.

Starting on the Friday (20 July), I drank a bottle of bourbon worth of Old Fashioneds, a bottle of vodka worth of White Russians, and another bottle of vodka worth of Moscow Mules. I ate cheeseburgers, fried chicken, ice cream, potato chips, cookies, brownies and pretty much everything I could get my hands on. I had a great time, but by the next Wednesday morning (25 July), I was up to 160.7 kg (354.3 lbs). Seriously, I had no idea I could load on the kilos so quickly.

The party was over, it was back to work on Wednesday, so I started behaving myself and lost 6.6 kg (14.5 lbs) over the next 5 days. I'm hoping to be back under 150 kg by my weigh-in next week. The main thing I'm doing to make that happen is eating a lot of beef and vegetable stew. I cooked up a big one in the slow cooker on Friday, ate it for dinner every night, and today I made another one that I'll eat for the next couple of days.

Simple reciple:

1 kg (2.2 lbs) of chuck roast
canned tomatoes
vegetable stock
sweet potato
carrots
spinach
chili peppers
potatoes
onions
green peas
corn kernels
balsamic vinegar
Worcestershire sauce
rosemary
thyme

1. combine vegetable stock, canned tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, and thyme in slow cooker

2. cut the roast into large pieces, brown in a hot skillet, dump into slow cooker

3. slice onions and cook over low heat until soft and brown, dump into slow cooker

4. cut chili peppers, vegetables into large pieces, dump into slow cooker

5. cook all day or overnight

I'm loving it, but I want to buy some spicier peppers next time.

Weigh-in: 25 June 2012

Today's weight: 151.8 kg (334.7 lbs)
Change: +3.7 kg (8.2 lbs)
Total loss: 43.7 kg (96.3 lbs)

Wow, what a crazy couple of weeks it's been. The bottom line is that I've put on over three-and-a-half kilos (over eight pounds) after a week of being sick and then a week of just eating like a lunatic. That gastro thing took longer to get over than I thought (and at first I thought it must've been something I ate, but now I'm thinking it wasn't because Tom and James ended up sick, too), and then when I did, I went into some sort of psycho feeding frenzy.

It all came to a head last weekend, when I decided to just go with it, bought a bunch of booze and junk food and had a good old-fashioned alcohol-induced pig-out. Actually, two of them. One on Friday night, then again on Saturday night, and then I got back on the wagon starting on Sunday.

I was supposed to be down to 145 kg at this point, and at one point last week, I actually had a shot at it. Last Tuesday, I weighed 146.7 kg, but that's when I was feeling the crappiest, hadn't eaten much of anything for a couple of days, and threw up. Once I started getting better, I immediately started putting on weight. Part of it was that I hadn't done the grocery shopping, so I was just eating whatever was around. Part of it was that for a couple of days, I was completely out of control.

Part of it, I think, is that after something like that, your body tries to make up for the lost weight and nutrition. I can think of several times over the years when I've gotten sick, lost a bunch of weight in the process, and then almost immediately put it back on as soon as I started feeling better. And the other part of it is that once it started, it's easy to go into a feeding frenzy, and hard to pull out of it.

But now I'm back on track, and my plan is to be down to 140 kg in six weeks. That makes my revised goals look like this:

2 July -         148.3 kg
9 July -         146.6 kg
16 July -       145.0 kg
23 July -       143.3 kg
30 July -       141.7 kg
6 August -    140.0 kg

So yeah, a two-week set-back is a bummer. No doubt about it. But I started this 125 weeks ago, so in relation to the bigger picture, two weeks isn't that big of a deal. The key is that I'm back on track and the number will start getting smaller again.

Weigh-in: 11 June 2012

Today's weight: 148.1 kg (326.5 lbs)
Change: -1.9 kg (4.2 lbs)
Total loss: 47.4 kg (104.5 lbs)

A 1.9 kg loss is awesome, but it's been a crazy trip getting there. Everything was going along fine until last night. I was down to 147.6 kg as of Sunday morning, and decided it would be okay to indulge a little bit on Sunday night. So I had fried chicken and pasta for dinner. Delicious, and I knew there would be a price to pay, and I was okay with that. Then, as often happens, a little bit of indulgence turned into a lot. Corn chips, salsa, sour cream, cheese dip, etc. And it was all good too, but within an hour of eating it, I started to feel sick.

It started off as just mild gastro-intestinal pain. Discomfort that was enough for me to stop trying to watch TV (or whatever I should call it when I'm watching a TV program on my iPad) and go to sleep. Only to wake up around 3:30 in enough pain that I couldn't get back to sleep. Finally around 5:30, I started grabbing 10-20 bits of sleep on the couch, and by 9:30 the pain had eased back to moderate, and I was able to go to bed and get larger (45-60 minutes) bits of sleep through the afternoon. Finally around 4:00 pm the pain started to ease back down to moderate discomfort, and I managed to get dinner cooked for the boys, then go back to bed until around 8:00pm. Then I got up, had a shower, threw up (no, not in the shower), then had another shower, and generally feel better now.

I've still got a lot of low-level pain, but I can't tell how much if it is from the gastro (mainly abdomen), from laying in bed all day (back, shoulders, hips), and from going on a brisk 6.28 kg (3.9 mi) walk around Lake Tuggeranong (hips). So the down-side is that I'm a miserable pile of shit at the moment. The up-side is that the jump from 147.6 to 148.1 kg has been reversed, and as of a few hours ago, I was back down to 147.5 kg.

Weekly Goal Weights: 11 June - 16 July

My goal weights for the next six weeks:

11 June - 148.3 kg (Done!)
18 June - 146.7 kg
25 June - 145.0 kg
  2 July - 143.4 kg
  9 July - 141.7 kg
16 July - 140.0 kg

140 kg will be lower than my lowest weight when I was in Weight Watchers, back in March of last year. That's going to feel good!
